Frequently Asked Questions About Fascia & Myofascial Release (MFR)

How should I prepare for my treatment session?

Myofascial Release is performed directly on the skin without the use of oils or lotions. Please arrive in clothing that allows for unrestricted access to the body.

• For women: loose-fitting or athletic shorts and a sports bra or tank top.

• For men: loose-fitting or athletic shorts.

Avoid applying any lotion or oil to your skin on the day of your session.

What happens during a session?

MFR is a whole-body treatment approach. In your initial session, the therapist will assess for fascial restrictions throughout the body. You may be treated in areas that don’t seem directly related to your primary concern. However, these areas can often be the root cause, creating tension or “drag” on nearby pain-sensitive structures.

Sessions are generally calming and restorative. Conversation may occur, but quiet body awareness is encouraged. Sharing sensations and feedback during your session helps the therapist customize treatment for maximum benefit.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no one-size-fits-all number of treatments. Each individual heals at their own pace based on many factors including motivation, commitment to self-treatment, chronicity of symptoms, and lifestyle. While some experience rapid improvement, others—especially those dealing with chronic or complex issues—may benefit from more frequent sessions over time. Progress is continually reassessed and treatment plans are adjusted accordingly.

Will the results last once my fascia releases?

Myofascial Release can offer long-lasting relief, but maintenance is key. Think of it like hygiene: just as you wouldn’t shower once and be clean forever, ongoing care is needed. Daily life places physical, mental, and emotional demands on the body. Practicing regular self-treatment for even 5–7 minutes a day can significantly reduce the likelihood of symptoms returning.

What makes the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach® unique?

The John F. Barnes MFR Approach® stands out by addressing the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. This holistic method not only works on physical restrictions but also honors emotional and energetic components of healing. It is a profoundly gentle yet effective form of manual therapy that supports deep, lasting change.

Why are the stretches held for so long during treatment?

Extended hold times are a hallmark of MFR. This allows the body to enter a therapeutic state where interleukin, a naturally occurring anti-inflammatory, is released. Stretches are generally sustained for 5 minutes or longer to ensure deep, lasting fascial release and tissue transformation.

How often should I receive treatment?

Optimal frequency depends on your goals, condition, and how quickly you wish to progress.

• For new clients: sessions 2–3 times per week are recommended for best results.

• Minimum recommendation: once a week.

• Maintenance care: once monthly, or as needed, once goals have been achieved.

Can Myofascial Release be used alongside other therapies?

Absolutely. MFR is highly complementary and enhances results when integrated with chiropractic care, physical therapy, acupuncture, massage, and more. It addresses the fascial system and mind-body connection, often unlocking deeper layers of healing and creating lasting outcomes.

What if I feel worse after a session?

This is known as a healing response or healing crisis. As your body releases long-held restrictions, it may temporarily react with soreness, fatigue, or emotional shifts. This is a normal and often positive sign that deeper healing is underway.

What should I do during a healing response?

During this time, it’s essential to support your body with rest, hydration, and nourishing food. Gentle movement and self-treatment techniques, which we can review together, can also be very beneficial. Listening to your body and allowing it space to heal will accelerate the recovery process.
